Primavera, Spanish Lavender is an upright perennial with loads of sweet-smelling, dark purple blooms. It stands 16 – 18 inches tall and 14 – 16 inches wide, it and has narrow, green leaves that have a silvery blue sheen. The flower heads are tall and look like macramé friendship bracelet braids. These flower heads are topped with small, open petals that resemble soft strips of rich purple fabric. They bloom all throughout the spring and summer. In warmer climates, the plant is evergreen and will bloom well into winter. Trimming the plant to half its size after each burst of blooms will ensure that it fills with blooms again. The cut flowers are wonderful in fresh or dried arrangements or in various crafts. The blooms have a strong, sweet scent that lasts even when it is dried and naturally repels bugs, moths, fleas, and mosquitoes. It is perfect as a natural potpourri or in sachets. Spanish Lavender attracts bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators and is a colorful and useful addition to any container, garden, or landscape.
Lavender is native to the Mediterranean region and flourishes in hot, dry climates. Spanish Lavender thrives in zones 7 – 9 but is cold hardy as a perennial to zone 5. In colder climates, it can be kept indoors in winter months. It loves a sunny spot in the garden and is heat and drought tolerant, with low watering needs, making it an easy plant to grow. It grows quickly and blooms prolifically for most of the year. It can withstand rocky or sandy soils and prefers drier soils; it is susceptible to root rot if too much moisture remains in the soil surrounding the roots. The lavender’s aroma is divine, and it has many benefits and uses. This small but colorful plant is a great addition in the garden for both its beauty and functionality.
We do want to mention, deer and rabbits tend to avoid Primavera Lavender, so this will be one plant to take off the varmint list. On the other hand, bees and butterflies will flock to the rich purple flowers giving competition for your cut flower projects.
Care:
Plant this plant in full sun (6+ hours a day) and most soils. It will sprawl out to form a small clump and tends to spread more quickly in light sandy type soils. On occasion, it is best to remover spent blooms (dead-heading) to encourage repeat blooming and tidy up the plant. When winter comes, it is recommended to mulch heavy around the plant to protect roots and stems.
Fertilize in early spring with our SR-18-5-10 slow release fertilizer for maximum growth and plant health.
Uses
Border, spacing 18" to 24" apart or Cut Flower and Dried Foliage arrangements. A great summer perennial for beneficials like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds that can feed when other plants are drying up in the heat.
