Plant Care
Unpacking Your Plants
- Unpack the plant(s) immediately upon arrival and water thoroughly. Soak the root ball in a bucket of water until all bubbles disappear to ensure the soil is fully saturated.
- Place the plant in a cool, shady location until ready to plant. Check daily for water needs but avoid overwatering.
- Prepare the final planting location before the plant arrives to improve success by getting it into the ground or pot quickly.
In-Ground Site Preparation
- Dig a hole 2-3 times the width and depth of the container, but no deeper than the container height. Loosen the soil and mix in organic amendments to create loose, well-drained soil with the proper pH. Organic compost and soil conditioners work well.
- Remove the container and position the root ball so its top is at least ½ inch above the soil line. Backfill gently with amended soil and lightly pack it around the roots.
- Soak the entire planting area with a slow trickle of water to fully saturate both the root ball and the backfilled soil.
- Apply mulch, such as pine straw or decorative mulch, to help retain moisture. In colder climates, apply a thicker layer to protect the roots.
- Check moisture 2-3 times per week for new plantings and once weekly for established plants. Keep the soil lightly damp, not too wet or dry. Water thoroughly, as irrigation systems and occasional rain may not reach the roots.
- Stake newly planted trees if needed, using a tree stake kit to keep them straight. Staking for up to a year is typically sufficient.
- Enjoy your new garden investment!
