The Hardy Pecan Tree, or Carya illinonensis, is a tall and deciduous tree that can grow up to 145 feet in rare instances. Typically, it stands between 40-75 feet with a trunk diameter up to 10 feet. Its foliage is characterized by pinnate leaves with 9-17 leaflets that are sharp and curved in shape, making it an ideal addition to gardens for all ages.

At the start of spring, the pencil-thick buds on the twigs are covered in fine fuzz and have a pale brown color. The leaves are triangular and bright yellow, while the blossoms are brownish-black and hairy, topped with 1/4 to 1/2 inch bud clusters. Pecan trees are one of the last to develop new branches and leaves in the spring.

Pecans rely on the wind for pollination, with both staminate and male flower buds growing together under the same canopy. The male catkins are yellow or green, while the smaller female catkins are yellow or yellowish. The flowers are grouped in clusters of three to six green flowers. The resulting fruit is an oval or oblong nut that is 1-2 inches in size, with a dark, textured brown shell (3-4 mm thick) that splits into four parts when ripe. This nut is surrounded by a papery hull. Although often mistaken for a type of nut, pecans are actually a single-stoned fruit, similar to hickory nuts. They are also known as "drupes."
