‘Karl Foerster’ Feather Reed Grass is a cool season grass that emerges in early spring with very erect foliage rising to just two feet tall. Shortly after that narrow golden yellow plumes shoot up to six feet tall all the while remaining very erect and tidy, turning tan in the later months. Nicknamed motion grass, in the slightest breeze it will dance back and forth gradually and in stronger winds will do the waltz! This being said, Karl Foerster adds electricity to the landscape with its movement and looks.

‘Karl Foerster’ grass is ideal for using along a fence or property line or to support a vertical element of architecture such as a corner on a house.  High impact with other shrubs like Boxwood and Hollies make your landscape stand out. Use several in a line along a long narrow planting bed. It loves full sun and is adaptable to dry or moist conditions.

A trip to Wyoming this fall was a trip to remember. As a horticulturist, the plants and trees were amazing and completely different from the plants we have in the South. One ornamental grass that stood out for me was Karl Foerster. Widely used in Jackson, WY, with good reason, this grass stood out above all other plants in the landscape. Beautiful green foliage with 50+ stems holding gorgeous tan plumes.  The uses were creative as well, being planted in small borders and hedges that reached 2-3 feet tall, to a wide array of container plantings, like barrels, wash tubs, and large urns. Why so many different containers? The locals said they could easily move the containers in and out of the cold weather at night and bring them back out when the temperatures warmed. Smart thinking, that got me to thinking Ornamental grasses need to be expanded in the container uses around the garden.
