Cherry-Go-Round™ Hydrangea is a 2023 new plant introduction! This will soon become everyone’s first choice for Red Hydrangeas in the garden. One the few re-blooming varieties, this large flowering mop-head selection will hold itself high above the competition. A cherry-punch colored bloom will outlast the summer heat and hold strong into the cold months of fall. Sturdy limbs can hold these large blooms without flopping and splitting the plant apart. its compact form, only reaching 2'x2' will not out-grow small areas in the garden. Super hardy as well, Cherry-Go Round™ Hydrangea thrives in zones 5-9 and can take -20-degree temperatures. Mulch heavy in the winter to protect roots and stems, removing after new growth begins to emerge.
Cherry-Go-Round™ Hydrangea Care
- Planting:
-
Choose the right location: Select a spot with well-draining soil that receives partial to full sunlight. Morning sun and afternoon shade are ideal, especially in hotter climates, to prevent the plant from getting stressed.
-
Soil preparation: Hydrangeas prefer rich, moist soil. Incorporate organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure into the planting hole to improve soil quality and moisture retention.
-
Planting depth: Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball of the plant. The top of the root ball should be level with the ground surface when planted.
-
Spacing: Ensure enough space between each Cherry-Go-Round™ Hydrangea plant, usually around 3 to 6 feet, depending on the variety.
- Watering:
-
Hydration is crucial: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the first year of planting. Hydrangeas generally require about 1 to 2 inches of water per week, either through rainfall or manual watering.
-
Avoid overwatering: While hydrangeas appreciate moist soil, they don't like to sit in waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot. Ensure good drainage in the planting area.
-
Moisture Maxx is a nonionic wetting agent and soil conditioner that helps prevent and treat localized dry spots (LDS) and other problem areas in turf and plants. It is specially formulated to improve water penetration and distribution in the soil, promoting healthy plant growth and reducing water waste.
-
Mulching: Apply a 2- to 4-inch layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
- Fertilizing:
-
Balanced fertilizer: Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer, SR-18-5-10 slow release Fertilizer , with equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. You can apply it in spring, once new growth starts to emerge.
-
Follow instructions: Read the instructions on the fertilizer packaging carefully and apply the recommended amount for the size of your Cherry-Go-Round™ Hydrangea.
-
Avoid over-fertilizing: Too much fertilizer can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flower production.
- Pruning:
-
Pruning time: Cherry-Go-Round™ Hydrangea blooms on old wood, meaning that the flower buds develop on the previous year's growth. Prune the plant immediately after it finishes flowering, typically in late summer or early fall.
-
Remove spent blooms: Deadhead the faded flowers throughout the blooming season to encourage new blooms and maintain a neat appearance.
-
Pruning for shape: If necessary, prune the plant to shape it or to remove any damaged or dead branches. However, avoid heavy pruning as it can reduce the number of blooms the following year.
Remember that specific care requirements may vary slightly depending on your local climate and soil conditions. By following these general care guidelines, you can help your Cherry-Go-Round™ Hydrangea thrive and produce beautiful cherry-red blooms year after year.
Uses
Cherry-Go-Round™ Hydrangea is regarded as a long-lasting versatile Hydrangea that serves well in borders, small hedges and specimen situations. If you love having showy potted containers this long-lasting bloomer will hold up to "deck life".
