The Avant Garde Clematis is a lovely climbing vine with dark green foliage and layered flowers. The flowers bloom on new growth from midsummer through fall, and each bloom is semi-double, layered with a rich magenta and vibrant pink. The base layer of the flower has five petals and is 2 inches across, open, and deep magenta. The upper layer is light pink and has an open cluster of thin petals similar to the petals of a chrysanthemum. The center of the pink layer has a small, lotus-shaped cluster of yellow anthers filled with nectar. These lovely flowers bloom vigorously along the vine and attract hummingbirds and butterflies.
Avant Garde reaches up to 10 feet tall and 4 feet wide and grows at a medium to fast rate. It is cut back yearly and grows back to its full size each year. It should be cut back to only about a foot tall early each spring and will grow every year to cover the area you choose and provide a colorful display of blooms. It flowers each year from midsummer until fall. It is part of the Varicella group of clematis, which absolutely bursts with small blooms through the summer months. Clematis also make beautiful cut flowers in fresh arrangements.
Care:
Avant Garde Clematis enjoys shade at its roots and sun across its leaves and blooms. It does well climbing a trellis or wall behind shrubs or other plants for an element of height and color. Unless used as a ground cover, it will need a trellis, fence, or other item to climb for support, and it climbs quickly to reach its full size.
If mass planting, space them 2 to 3 feet apart to allow room for the root systems and for the growth of each plant. Dig a hole 2 to 3 times the size of the root ball and a few inches deeper. To help keep it cool, the crown (top of the root system) should be planted about 4 inches below the soil level to promote underground stem development. Backfill the soil and water thoroughly.
Clematis thrives in moist, well drained soil, preferably with a neutral PH. Cover its roots with a layer of mulch to keep the roots cool and moist. After the clematis establishes, fertilize it each spring with an all-purpose fertilizer. Early spring is also a great time to add an all-purpose fertilizer and mulch, keeping them both away from direct contact with the stems.
Avant Garde is part of Pruning Group 3, which needs a heavy pruning each year, leaving only two pairs of buds on each stem. It blooms on new wood, so trimming it back in the late winter or early spring promotes new growth and flowering. Dead or damaged stems can be removed anytime during the year.
Use in the Landscape:
Avant Garde Clematis grows in zones 4 - 9 and has a sweet vanilla scent. It is deer and rabbit resistant and grows at a medium rate. It is very low maintenance and easy to grow, It will climb on a trellis, wall, pergola, or along the ground. Place it to grow wherever you would like. It can be placed around a door or a garden entry for an enchanting arch. This lovely vine will turn any area into an oasis of rich greens and beautiful magenta and pink blooms in just a few months and year after year. Since the Avant Garde is pruned back yearly, if it is planted in a container, it can be arranged around the landscape in different locations each year, adding an element of variety and charm.
